The Lord of the Rings is an American-New Zealand film Saga directed by Peter Jackson and based on the three-volume novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien.
Considered one of the most ambitious projects in film history, with a budget of $285 million. It began development by Jackson in 1995 and came to fruition with the production studio New Line Cinema. The entire project took eight years.
The films were a great commercial success, grossing a total of almost $3 billion when released in theaters. They were overall critically acclaimed, and received strong awards, including winning seventeen Oscars out of thirty nominations.
